Recently the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) released an issue paper on “Reducing the Impacts of Agricultural Nutrients on Water Quality across a Changing Landscape”. Through a network of experts, CAST assembles, interprets, and communicates credible, balanced and science-based information for policymakers, the media, the private sector and the public. This particular paper was co-authored by a team of experts including TFI’s Vice President of Stewardship and Sustainability, Lara Moody.
The paper addresses the complex interaction among numerous physical, chemical and biological variables and considers the direct implications those processes have on nutrient management, crop productivity, and environmental losses. The paper considers the role 4R and supporting conservation practices have in reducing loss to the environment. And, it identifies existing challenges linked to knowledge gaps and policies that inhibit solving some of the water quality challenges.
