On September 25, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) held a Partnership Meeting to discuss nitrogen management through utilization of the 4Rs. The USDA Partnership Meeting was a time for representatives from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to gather and discuss pertinent issues. At this meeting, they met to discuss technologies and approaches for nitrogen management through utilization of 4R Nutrient Stewardship. The discussion was initiated with invited presentations from academia and industry, as well as by ARS researchers. Tom Bruulsema, Northeast Regional Director for the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), represented the fertilizer industry with a presentation on nitrogen technologies and approaches based on the 4Rs. Other presentations included information on Cornell University’s Adapt-N tool for nitrogen management in corn and on crop canopy sensors for in-season nitrogen management. The session was held to broaden the use of 4Rs within USDA, as well as to consider how they can better support and target resources for 4R implementation.
